The Top 5 Reasons you need to read DECEPTION (HAUNTING EMMA). Now.

1. Let's not bury the lead here, today we are GIVING AWAY a copy of DECEPTION (HAUNTING EMMA) by Lee Nichols. To enter all you have to do is be a follower and leave your best ghost story in the comments. The contest is open until 11:59 PM on Sunday June 6th. Trust me, you want to enter this contest and if you don't win, you absolutely need to order the book immediately. It's that good. Seriously.

2. It's a ghost story. And who doesn't love a good ghost story? I dare you not to want to read this book after you've read the following description from Amazon.com: When Emma's parents disappear she finds herself in the hands of a new guardian—her college-age "knight in J.Crew armor," Bennett Stern. But she can't shake the strange visions that are haunting her. She has memories she can't explain, and Emma doesn't trust anyone anymore—except maybe Bennett. But he's about to reveal a ghostly secret to Emma. One that will explain the visions . . . and make Emma fear for her life.

3. Emma ROCKS. I mean, I love her. She's so funny, fresh, independent and self-assured--all of the qualities so many YA heroines seem to lack these days.

4. The romance. I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say that the romantic tension JUMPS off the page in this book. It's always fun to read a novel that reminds you what it's like to fall in love for the first time and DECEPTION definitely delivers.

5. You're going to want to know what happens next. DECEPTION is the first book in a series and trust me when I say you're really going to want to know what happens next. The ending of this book made me want to jump up and down and scream. And then it made me want to read the next book in the series. Immediately.

So, you've got your orders:

1. Enter our contest to win DECEPTION by leaving a ghostly comment on this post and following our blog.

2. Check back on Monday to see if you've won.

3. If you don't win, order your copy of DECEPTION immediately.

4. Read the book and e-mail me so we can dish about it. I can't wait to hear what you guys think!

Another book to add to my 'to be ordered' list! Thanks so much for doing these reviews- this sounds right up my alley. True ghost story:
My cousin and her fiancé were visiting family who had just moved into their new home. It was christmas. The family had a young son who was an only child. Other people on the street had warned them the house was haunted by a young boy and sure enough, strange things started happening. Things culminated christmas day when the family were sitting around the tree. They told the little boy to open his presents. He looked up at them with a vacant stare and said 'and what about me? Don't I get any presents?' The family were shocked because his voice and the look in his eye was so different. They repeated that all the presents were 'his' and asked what was wrong with him. He had no memory of speaking. That night one of the remote control cars kept waking everyone up. The father took tha batteries out but a few minutes later it could still be heard driving around the downstairs. In the photos taken around the tree, a strange boy could be seen sitting next to their son and video tape taken while they were out shopping showed the remote control car driving itself around the room while no one was home.

This book does sound really awesome! I love ghost stories, so I'll definitely be reading this book.
Here's my story:
My mom used to take care of my great-grandma when I was around 8. We moved in with her so she wouldn't be alone, since she couldn't really take care of herself anymore. She was in her late 80's and had been living alone for about 30 years. My great-grandpa had died in the kitchen of the house when he was in his 50's. Everything was fine until she had a heart attack, we called the paramedics and they had pronounced her dead, but on the way to the hospital they revived her. According to them she had been dead for 20 mins. When we brought her back home she had to stay in bed, but there were times when she would call out for my mom or my grandma and she would tell them that the "angel" above her bed was calling for her, but she refused to go with him. She would also say that there was a man in the bathroom watching her and she was always so scared. My mom would tell her there was no one there, but from then on she always made sure to leave the bathroom door closed for her. One day I was in the room helping put her sweater on because she was really cold and my mom comes in and stands in the doorway. My grandma says, "Connie, who is that man behind you." My mom replies, "Oh that's just Frank (my dad)" without looking back to see if anyone was actually there. She replies with, "No. That's not him." and just keeps on staring. So my mom turns around and then looks at me and her eyes just popped, she ends up running out of the room and I got scared so I ran after her leaving my poor grandma behind. I asked her, "What happened?" She swears that she felt a man's hand on her shoulder which she thought was my dad's. She was so terrified of being in her room at night after that, but nothing else happened that I know of.

Sounds interesting, please sign me up!

The house we lived in in the last 20 something years was haunted. Thankfully not by some menacing ghost, but the presence could be felt: light switches clicked off in certain rooms even though it was no blackout, the light was still on in the corridor, doors opened. But the most bizarre thing happened to me: one night at around 3:45 am I woke up to loud snoring. I looked up and saw the silhouette of a man sleeping on its back ith interlaced hands on his belly sleeping in the bed across mine. I thought it must be my dad for whatevere reason, maybe he had a fight with my mom who decided to sleep on the spare bed. The next day I asked my dad, and he told me that no, they didn't ahve a fight and he slept in his own bed, but that he awoke at around 3:45 am. To this day I still don't know if that was my dad in some kind of astral projection or a ghost, but I know what I saw and heard! I wokr up to the snoring because it was so loud!

I have always LOVED ghost stories/mysteries. I will read the book whether I win it or not. How fun.

I'm a follower, and so here are two of my ghost-like stories. (1) My best friend dreamed flashing lights several nights in a row. Foreshadowing of what was going to happen: my daughters injured a few nights later in a car crash. Flashing lights, helicopter, ambulances. (2) When my mother died, at age 97, the day before her funeral I went to see the remodeled house where she had lived for 58 years; the house I grew up in. Two young women had recently bought it. When I told them who I was, I felt an electric current passing between them as they looked at each other. I shivered as the younger woman told me that a few weeks earlier, right at the time my mother died, she felt something/someone brushing against her, touching her hand, several times on that particular day. I knew it was my mother! She hadn't wanted to leave the house when we'd had to take her out of it and put her in a nursing home. She had come back to see it one more time. The two women took me on a tour. The house had been completely remodeled. Didn't look at all, inside, like the house I had grown up in. But there was one thing from the past the remodeler had left: the old-fashioned claw-footed tub in the upstairs bathroom. The woman had felt the "presence" especially in this room. She smiled and said maybe that was my mother's favorite room. No, I said. That's where my dad went to get away from her nagging tongue! I have since reflected: Sad about my mother. She loved her house, plain and sagging though it was. She hadn't wanted to leave it.

The story sounds fabulous. I'm already a follower.

I actually have a couple ghost stories but I'll share this one with you.

I started babysitting for these people, nice quiet country folk, three kids. Once the parents left, the oldest began telling me about the 'ghost' that lived in their house. (I'm like...yeah, whatev.)

After the kids went to bed, I sat on the couch watching some horror flick. I got up and went to the bathroom. The house was an old farmhouse, creaks and all.

I left the small den where the TV was, went through the dining room, through the kitchen, down a long skinny hallway--which went through the dad's office--and finally came to a small bathroom. Did what I needed to do and went back to the TV room.

Then I heard something--almost like static on a radio from way down that long hallway. Hmm...do I check it out or run and call 911? Yup, I morphed into the stupid horror-flick chick who heard the chainsaw and said 'Hmm...wonder what that is?'

I retraced my route until I came to that skinny hallway that sliced through the dad's office. I squinted. The noise was louder. I moved closer. Although my head was spinning to look behind me, I kept moving closer.

The coldest sensation blanketed me as I crossed the threshold of the bathroom. I almost fainted. The ENTIRE far wall was covered in......................................................................BUGS! Bugs, I tell you. Little, nix or mingy type bugs. Plastered like old wallpaper. And the bathroom now looked dingy and old. I turned, and there was a reflection in the mirror. It wasn't mine. To this day, I still don't know what it was. I bolted out of there so fast and got on the phone with my mother.

As I spoke to my mom, I noticed the noise had stopped. This was only about a minute later. I walked back down the hall and peered into the bathroom. It was pristine clean, like nothing had been there.

*Smiles* -- I stopped babysitting at that house.

Here's my ghost story: I was driving by a cemetery one night at dusk and saw a young woman walking. She looked like she was deep in thought and I wondered if she had come to visit someone's grave. As I got nearer, I noticed a pair of shoes walking next to her. Shoes with no one in them. I stared at those shoes as much as I dared while driving. After a few seconds, the image of a man wearing a trench coat slowly materialized in the shoes like a special effect in a ghost movie. Maybe it was just the dusky light playing tricks on my eyes, but I will never forget that image.

My ghost story:

My roommate and I in college moved into a new apartment together. Well, it wasn't new, but it was decent. Hey, it was college. Anyway, we later discovered that we got the apartment because the lady living in it before had died. Depressing. Odd. But we could deal. It's not as if there were any evidence of this in the apartment, thank goodness.

One night we were watching TV and my roommate placed her empty glass on top of the TV, a completely flat surface. Suddenly, the glass flew across the room. I am not exaggerating. It was as if some force shoved it off the TV. It didn't teeter. It didn't slip. It was slammed to the floor. We stared at each other for a long time. We both saw it.

I think the ghost of the previous tenant would prefer us to use coasters. =)

This book sounds great. I used to work in a historic village and one of my coworkers who gave tours at the old inn said that she was often hearing voices inside and once had a bowl of oatmeal thrown at her. Some landed on her neck even though there was no one around. I only gave tours in that building a few times, and never saw or heard any ghosts, but I always found it to be a creepy place.

Wow, this book sounds awesome.

My ghost story:
My grandmother had been in hospital a few days and was unconcious. On Good Friday she opened her eyes, stared into the corner of the room and her face was bathed in a strange glow. Her wrinkles disappeared and she lifted her arms and a tear rolled down her cheek. A few moments later she died.
We looked up but there was nothing there, but it felt like there was a presence in the room. The way she smiled I'm certain it was my great-grandmother coming for her.

Ooo that looks great! Adding to my list for sure... Let's see.

Okay were heading back to my mom's house, my room circa 1991ish I was playing Nintendo, like ya do. Mario was about to jump on a shell dude and I heard a male voice say my name as clear as if he was in the room. So I answered, thinking it was my step-dad. "Yeah?"

Nothing.

Hmm that's strange.

Then the creepy-crawlies began on my neck and trickled all the way down. My heart spat out fast beats as I ran down the stairs to my mom's room. I told her what happened, asked if my step-dad was awake, she said no... I've slept with a fan ever since, and haven't heard anything since. My sister got that room when I left, and of course, hasn't heard anything.

Was it all in my head? I don't know, but I don't think so.

I love ghost stories!! Thanks ladies ;o)

Wow, that sounds like an amazing book - how is it that when you guys review a book, it always gets added to by TBR pile? Seriously. :) I guess the way you love books shows in your reviews.
This is actually a true story, probably somewhere in the witching hours, but I was asleep so it’s hard to say. My room is shaped sort of like a triangle, and my bed is pushed up against the hypotenuse and has black drapes hanging from the canopy, but I sleep with them pulled back. I was having the waking dreams – you know, the ones that you can control, because you’re not entirely asleep – and they weren’t nightmares, just dreams. I was sleeping with my back to the room, because when I was bored trying to fall asleep I would trace the patterns etched into the wall with my finger.
I woke up, not suddenly, sort of in the way you fall asleep, you know? Like you’re not exactly sure when or how it happened. My eyes were shut when I woke up, which was strange for me, but I felt cold. Not cold like ‘chilled to the bone’ cold, but cold like my skin was fire and my heart was ice. I tried to open my eyes, but the coldness got worse and I couldn’t.
You know that strange feeling when you can feel someone in the room, even when they don’t make noise? I did, a tangible presence whose breath echoed in my stomach, but when I tried to listen, I heard nothing. At this point, I was pretty freaked, let me tell you.
I knew that whoever was in my room – ghost, demon, ax murderer, take your pick – would have to do what they came to do when they knew I was awake. The feeling in my stomach was worse than anything I could imagine, so I forced my eyes open. I just wanted it to end.
I sleep in pitch darkness, otherwise I can’t sleep. Sometimes there’s a soft blue light from my CD player, but I had covered it that night with a towel. Still, when I opened my eyes, the room wasn’t dark, there was a light directly behind me – white, I think. Definitely not the green light on the edge of my laptop. How could I tell where the light was coming from? Well, there was a shadow against the wall I was facing.
Do shadows like that have genders? I’d say not, all I could say is it definitely wasn’t a woman, but it didn’t exactly seem like a man. Not human at all, but the coldness in my heart shot into my mind and my feet at the exact moment my eyes opened. All thought of confrontation vanished.
It was just standing there. Do it, I thought, just do it already. I didn’t speak, at least, I don’t think so, but it heard me; that single thought that slipped past the cold. The shadow raised a hand, there was something heavy and flat in it. The hand slammed down toward me, I couldn’t hear it, but I knew. My eyes shut and my fear vanished, seconds before stars exploded in front of my eyes.
Then it was over. No physical pain or impact, just those stars. A few minutes later, when I could force myself to turn around, there was nothing there. No shadow, no hand…
No white light.

Long story short... ditched 10th grade to stay home and... doesn't matter. Me and my buddy were talking about a "vision" he had in the mirror at his house across the street that morning. He saw an old man staring at him in the mirror, and once he gave a description, it sounded like the old man that used to live in his house (before he died, then my buddy's family moved in).

I thought he was full of it. As we talked about it, we both happened to glance across the street to his house, and saw a ghostly figure float across his front yard. We both saw it, and it freaked him out so much, he didn't go home for a few days (he crashed at my house).
The End. :)

Is it me or does that chick on the cover look a lot like Kristi Swanson from the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie?

My ghost story.

For many nights in a row we were awakened in the night by a deep voice, very faint, but maniacal sounding. We could not make out what it said and when it didn’t repeat, we would drift back off to sleep, only to be disturbed again the next night by the same voice.

We determined that it was coming from my son’s room and at first suspected he may be talking in his sleep. We moved him in with us and later that night was awakened by the same voice. I rushed in and jerked open his closet door. I would not let fear stop me from purging his room of an evil presence. I’d watched enough horror movies to know what to do. Confrontation is the only way.

His closet was empty. Empty of anything evil anyway, instead it was filled to overflowing with toys of every shape and size. I heard clearly that deep, grating voice and now I could make out a few words.

“Mooorphin….”

I dug in his toy chest where the sound seemed to be coming from and what did I find?

An old Power Ranger action figure staring up at me and as I was about to pick it up, it said these words…

“It’sss Mooorphin Timmmme.”

The sound mechanism had wound down from age and wear. The voice was a deep warble and its chipped, painted on eyes regarded me accusingly.

It was taken out with the trash the next morning.

Lisa Gail Green said...

This sounds like my type of book!! Okay. Here's my TRUE ghost story:

When my son was a newborn I was feeding him constantly at night (no surprise there I know). He had one of those toy pads you put on the floor with the arc of dangling toys that hangs down and he cooed up at. Well, I was feeding him on the couch in the early AM hours and started to doze off. All of a sudden - and mind you there was no breeze, no open windows, no air conditioner that just kicked on or anything - the toys on the playground started swinging HARD and jingling. Well, I certainly woke up fast enough. I wonder though if it was a ghost or guardian angel since it woke me up while holding my baby. :) So there. That's my weird story.

Very cool, exciting stuff!

Okay, a ghost story. When I was a kid I used to spend a few weeks every summer at my grandparents house in a small Texas town. As you would expect, there wasn't much to do in such a small town, but I had a few friends in town and my grandparents lived next to an abandoned lot of old houses, so we ended up spending most days creeping around the houses, trying doors and peeking in windows. And when I say old houses, I mean from the early 1900's, with wrap around porches and elaborate wood work. They were all filled with stuff, like storage spaces, but many of the windows had curtains so it was hard to see inside. One day my friend and I were rambling around the houses like we always did, and we walked past one of the houses in the back of the lot that had an especially creepy vibe because of the state of disrepair it sat in. I glanced at the front windows in passing and saw a flash of white, a bit of a lace dress and a face. When I looked back there was nothing, and the curtains were completely still. But I would have sworn I saw a young girl in a white lace dress, just standing there, watching us. I didn't believe in ghosts and I don't know that I do now, but I have no real explanation for what I saw that day. Gave me the willies.

Vicki Rocho said...

Oh, I love ghost stories! I could keep you hear all day telling you the family lore. But I'll stick with one that happened TO me and not my fam.

Hubs, daughterling & I moved back to Iowa in 1998. We bought a house shortly thereafter. An unassuming 60's ranch. Almost right away we would hear voices in the middle of the night. They were muffled like a radio in another room. You can hear it, but can't understand anything. We chalked it up to noisy neighbors. Then we heard them at 3 a.m. in January in the middle of a cold snap (thirty below...brrr). What we were hearing couldn't be the neighbors.

We heard footsteps, and sometimes I would hear horse hooves clomping on the brick street on the north side of our house.

No biggie. Not in my family anyway.

Things began disappearing. Mostly little stuff, again no big deal.

Every time my husband would sleep on the couch a woman would wake him up.

I saw a woman standing in the doorway of our bedroom mostly silhouette, wearing a long turn-of-the century dress.

One night when daughterling was at Grandma's (90 miles away) hubs and I both woke up when we heard a child crying "Daddy!" from her bedroom. We both ran in there, THEN remembered daughter wasn't home.

But the thing that freaks my sister (#1) out (who could tell you stories to keep you up at night) is that I had a little girl (about 4) who would climb into bed with me at night while my husband was at work. At first I thought it was my daughter, but every time I woke up the spot next to me was empty.

I saw her once, long flowing blond hair racing down my hallway.

My sister (#2), who has a gift for this sort of thing, came to visit once and told me there was a woman and two children - boy and a girl - and that she had lived on the spot back when it was a farm. Something about an evil male relative trying to swindle her out of the farm she struggled to run herself.

Whew...sorry it was so long. Couldn't help myself!

This sounds fantastic, you guys! Uh, romantic tension, count me in (and by this, I'm assuming you mean sex sex sex--wait, what? No? Anyway.) Who doesn't like a good ghost story, right?

Except, I can't actually think of any. I can come up with some pretty good alien experiences, though. Does that count? They're kind of ghostlike. Sorta. Oh wait, I've got one. When I was a kid, I used to play at this one house that had been abandoned halfway through its construction. This house was said to be haunted by the owner who died before he finished paying for it (hence, the abrupt stop to construction). Well, next to the house, there was a lake that was beautiful, except it was filled with alligators. But I was a major daredevil, and one day, I was very angry with my friends (can't remember why--some ordeal over a kissing rock, I think), and I took off and said, "I'm going to swim in the lake. If I die, it's all your fault." Of course, no one actually came after me because those turkeys didn't believe I'd do it. When I got to the lake, there was this alligator coming up to the edge of the water. I froze and got all wide-eyed and just about died. I thought for sure, I'd be food. But then some blue light shined right on top of the alligator and the thing flipped around and dived back into the water. Freaky, huh?

P.S. The blue light never happened, and I never actually saw the alligator. The end.

P.P.S. You won my contest.

My best ghost story was when I lived in Hawaii as a kid. Our house was haunted by a Kahuna. The only way my parents could hire babysitters was in pairs since they were too afraid to stay at our house alone.

After a few weird incidents, my parents held an exorcism. Actually, it was really a party where they served colorful cocktails and then hiked up the mountain behind our house while singing drinking songs. After that, the Kahuna left us alone.

Okay, my ghost story!

One night I went to bed (honestly the first line of my ms is much better than this!). I had a weird feeling, like my grandmother (who was alive) was telling me something. In English. She doesn't speak English. Only Finnish. She told me I was going to have a baby girl. I had two boys (one was only 7 months old) and we weren't planning to have any more. I looked at my alarm clock: 11:20 pm.

The next day, my mom phoned to tell me my grandmother died the day before at 11:20 pm.

Naturally, I rushed to the pharmacy and bought a pregnancy test. Whew! Negative.

Three months later, my husband and I apparently had a oops! moment. I was pregnant . . . with a girl.

And yes, that was a true story. I still get freaked out thinking about it. :D

Ahh, I want this book so bad! Can I still be entered in the contest? I don't really have a scary story; my life is reletively ghost free. The creepiest yhing to happen to me is sometimes things randomly fall off the counters at night. But I mostly blame the cat for that. This book sounds great.

And here's my story...

I was around six or seven. The three other people that were at my house were all in the living room, while I headed down the dark hall towards the bathroom. Bad idea. It was at night and the only light was coming from the kitchen and living. As I turned by one corner I saw the back view of a feminine figure, though it appeared to have short hair. It was also all in light,so no clothes, etc. could be seen. Mostly like an outline or something. Needless to say I ran out of there screaming bloody murder, but now looking back on that maybe I was having a vivid dream...though I feel like it was my aunt. She passed when I was toddler, but I've been told she was extremely attached to me since, she refused to have children of her own due to her having a terminal illness. Strangely enough, she did have short hair.

Haven't read a ghostly YA book in a while, so this sounds pretty good!

My story:

One afternoon after school, my friend Amy and I were in the girls' basketball locker room, just hanging out until the football game later that night. We had heard stories of our (tiny) high school being haunted, but we didn't believe them, having never experienced anything for ourselves.
