The Great Accent Debate: A Vlog

As most of you are aware there has been a lot of controversy about our so-called accents over the past few weeks. Eventually we were coerced into settling the dispute by posting a Vlog using words contributed by our readers and scripted by Little Ms. J. (If you aren't already following LMJ, you need to get your butt over there and hit the follow button. She's way funnier than we are and we sort of hate her for it.)

Anyways, back to the Vlog, we taped it yesterday and the end result is something between moderately amusing and humiliating. A few reminders before you view:

1. The script was delivered to us 30 seconds before we started filming.
2. Apparently Lisa has a raging case of the crazy eyes. Who knew?
3. This thing is LONG. We totally understand if you want to stop watching 30 seconds in, but LMJ had to work in a lot of words and she's not exactly known for her brevity.
4. The camera adds 10 pounds. Seriously. Don't argue.

The setting: Five years in the future Lisa and Laura are living in twin Barbie mansions. They are both wearing diamond encrusted yoga pants and have cabana boys named Josue (prounounced Ho-sway) and Javier. They've been on the NYT Bestseller's list over and over and they're getting tired of hearing from that needy chick Oprah.

Now it's time to put it to a vote...

Do Lisa and Laura have an accent?

I am seriously wiping tears out of my eyes cracking up at you two adorable chicks with thick accents. I must say when Laura said "pass" I thought, "That's it!!!!!!

It's there, my Loves. It's there.

But you guys are too cute and MS J's script has got to be the funniest thing ever.

well played Jeanette, well played :-)

Get that girl an agent. She rocks!!!!

P.S. I think Jeanette should be next. And y'all need to write HER script!

Too funny!

Some words are totally Midwest (I'm from Kansas originally) but, after having lived in upstate New York for the past 8 years, I wouldn't question it if you said you were from Syracuse.

In other words, my opinion counts for nothing. LOL!

That is too funny. You guys are adorable. I would never pass this test. I'm from Nashville and full of twang.

Okay, that was funny.

You don't have a pronounced accent, but it's there. Your tells: quarter, Illinois, and, soccer (I knew you were lying in the 8th grade, Jessica!)

Carolyn V. said...

You guys crack me up! =) Hee hee

Kimberly Derting said...

I have to say, I didn't hear it! But I cracked the hell up the entire time. You two are hilarious! And I would *totally* buy stuff with Twizzlers and tootsie rolls, let me know when they're accepted at Target...

And a standing-O to LMJ for the script!

Brava, ladies. Brava!

You gals are too funny! The script was hilarious!

There is a slight accent there lol!

But this is coming from someone who was born in RI. We don't have library's we have liberries-Seriously! We often get mistaken for a Bostonian, but no way we are a talk all our own. Yes I get picked on here in NH now! Guess you can't help talking the talk!

LOL!!!!!!! I have to say that I was so busy tuning into your accents-or lack thereof, that I had no idea what the hell you were even talking about (sorry lmj). And I'm so happy b/c I am from your town, and that means I have no accent either-yippee!!! you two are so cute!

Little Ms J said...

First of all, you can't have your family voting that you don't have an accent. I saw your poll. It's fixed.

It was repertoire and class that had me sold!

Very funny ladies! Sorry for the length, but how the hell do you get aardvark and flan in a script and have it make sense?

storyqueen said...

Definitely Ohio!! But when I went to vote, it told me I already voted, which I didn't....strange...???

But yes, if I were Ohio, I would be proud of my accented girls.

(P.S. you guys are too adorable.)

Hehehe... Very cute! I'm not a pro at picking out accents, but I'll go with Ohio on this one.

Fun!

Awesome!

And what accent? You guys didn't have one at all! Of course I'm another fellow Ohioan, so maybe I just didn't hear it :P

sunna said...

Helooooooo, Ohio.

You two are, seriously, so cute. :)Also "raging case of the crazy eyes" is my new favorite phrase.

Heidi Willis said...

my cheeks hurt from laughing! You guys are hilarious! (and I'd bet that's a word that would sound accented!).

I really only heard accent on quarter and repertoire...and folks. I think that L should be silent in there! :)

Too, too funny!

Natalie said...

You girls are hilarious! And you totally have accents! I could tell on words with a's and o's (folks, on, attack, cottage, sass, class, happy, apple, soccer, and adverb). Luckily the midwest accent is really cute! If you want to find a region that really doesn't have accents try the northwest :)

Sara Raasch said...

Haha! So much fun! Though I heard no accent. I think it may be because I have the same so-called "accent."

Lori W. said...

I'm gonna say no accent. Lisa - maybe, but Laura sounds like she could be from California to me. Loved the pop-up commentary.

Robin Mellom said...

OH my word, you two are the cutest people on the planet!!!
Yes, there are accents... Just say "pasta" and "soccer mom" over and over. It's there. :-)

Too flipping cute. Keep 'em coming!!! :-)

Kim said...

cracking up! Yes, it's there. Not as distinctly as my "Team Ohio" neighbors, but it's there. Polly gave it away for me. My neighbors pronounce it, "Paulie". Yours is similar, just more subtle.

Oh, and soccer and actually were accented too. :)

So much fun! Great script! And...why was Laura's script all chewed up?

Donna Gambale said...

I'm so happy you guys did this - I giggled terribly! Thanks LMJ!

Natalie pinpointed the accent right on the nose - I heard it most in soccer, her, quarter, Missouri, sure, that, book, etc. But my Philly accent butchers a ton, too.

And "world denomination"? I'm still laughing. I'm very confident that one day soon you'll denominate the world.

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

hahahahaha! I know we need never worry about world domination from you gals but I suspect you took elocution class so you could dispell the crick myth. Just saying....

Shannon Messenger said...

That was hilarious! I've never seen such inspired eye rolling and eyebrow furrowing! (You guys are so, SO brave to post video of yourself online. I'm not entirely sure I could ever be brave enough to do it.) Thank you for making this, I couldn't stop giggling. :) (Oh, and I still have no idea what an Ohio accent is. I live in Cali-we don't get a lot of Ohio around here--though we SHOULD!) :)

Unknown said...

Oh my gosh, y'all are hilarious! That was so great!

Tana said...

You can have the world domination and I'll take the denomination's (I like mine in fifties and hundred's thank you;) Too funny. Tell Oprah I say hello!

Are you guys on Twitter? I'll have to go back and check. If not, get on it. ;) Happy Turkey Day!

Shannon O'Donnell said...

Everyday, this blog is the highlight of my morning - I love, love, love you two! Could you be any more adorable? Clearly, the popular opinion and most repeated Lisa and Laura descriptor is... ADORABLE! ;-)

Sarah Wylie said...

I'm sorry LMJ, but I'm switching sides. They sound like TV-Americans...you know, as accentless as Americans can be.
But FABULOUS script, LMJ, and LiLa, the camera loves you, as Tyra would say. Adorable and hilarious.

Vlog on!

XiXi said...

Now, I can't really tell what your accent is, but I'm pretty sure you have one. It's slight, but it's there.

But that's the best script ever.

Jill Kemerer said...

Yep, I could be your accent triplet. It's a midwest thing! Loved the pop-up video effects!

Rebecca Knight said...

This was awesome! :D LOL. Your accents came through on "ahn and ahn" and "sahccer mahms" (but very light.)

You guys are even cuter and more hilarious than I imagined, which is saying a lot.

Good luck with your quest for World Denomination ;).

Loretta Nyhan said...

LOVE it! Too funny.

And, no accent (at least to my Midwestern ears), but I can tell you lived in Chicago!

Tess said...

I don't hear an accent - but the vlog was lots of fun :D

happy turkey day!

Also I have an award for you!!!

Sherrie Petersen said...

Oh, that was funny! And you know, the accent isn't thick, but it's there. Definitely on the vowels. But don't worry. I'm not going to tease you or anything :)

Anonymous said...

Yeah, you guys were pretty much screwed in the first few sentences :)

But an Ohio script without mentioning either the Buckeyes or Bearcats ... or Brady Quinn, or LeBron...come on LMJ!

I think Lisa could read into it and was trying to hide a bit, but Laura was pretty natural going right at it.

But this was fun - I think everyone should get a short stereotypical script and vlog it.

Hardygirl said...

TOTAL accent!!!

And, whoops for Miss J! I just wish that you had dressed in the diamond encrusted yoga pants, and I could've used a glimpse of the cabana boys.

I stand by my Midwest roots.

No Accent!

This was such a cute idea. Sorry, but there's an accent, though as others have mentioned, it is slight. It's on some of the As and Os.

Thanks for being brave enough to share this with us. Haha. :)

Great vlog! No accent. You girls are made of all things fantastic!!

Great script, LMJ!

JESSJORDAN said...

I was so distracted by the popups (I love popups, fyi) that I had to watch the vlog twice to appreciate LMJ's script.

First off, well played, LMJ. Well played.

Second, the accent is mild, but it's definitely there.

Thanks for the laugh :)

PurpleClover said...

Oh wow. Total accent. Especially with the words: On, Folks, That, Bag, etc.

You guys are from Ohio. Just admit it. lol.

Weronika Janczuk said...

By the way, this is just the most awesomest thing on the planet. :)
