It is no secret that Lisa and I read entirely too much YA. This may or may not contribute to the fact that we still think we're sixteen. So it was only natural that a few months ago I sent out a notice to all of my neighbors advertising a teen book club that would take place in my living room.
We just moved here last year and I think 90% of them were creeped out by the invite, the other 9% think that I'm 15 and were concerned that no parents were going to be home, and 1% were interested! Last night was our first ever meeting, and I have to say, it was a raging success!
Okay, fine we had two girls show up, but it was a raging success!
We read HUSH, HUSH by Becca Fitzpatrick and the girls absolutely loved it. They thought Nora was realistic, Patch was dangerously dreamy and Vee was entertaining. They loved how elements of fantasy were woven into a realistic setting and were thrilled to hear of a sequel. We even discussed who we would cast in a HUSH, HUSH movie--a little Taylor Kitsch as Patch anyone??
Anyways, spending an evening with two living, breathing young adults? So, so much fun. Lisa just couldn't resist asking some of her burning questions...Are you on Facebook? Yes. Do you have cell phones? Yes and No (had never heard of a pager, which was the equivalent to a cell phone in our YA days). Do you have a bedtime? Yes.
Next up? THE HUNGER GAMES!

This is TOO cool!! My favorite indie bookstore has a teen bookclub, but I wouldn't be welcome (I mean, MOM showing up . . . sheesh . . . talk about blowing the mojo).
But, I'd actually love to get more of my friends reading YA. So perhaps I could get something going with my mom friends--I could bill it as a great way to understand their kids.
Here's what I really want to know--what kind of food did you serve?? Chips with sour cream and onion? Big bowls of peanut m & ms? Bagel bites?

That's great. i wish I had some young adults in the neighborhood. The cholesterol levels are way too high around here. *sigh* I think I'll pick up hush hush, myself.
My neighbors are scared of me and I actually rang their doorbells to introduce myself. Something about personal interaction in suburban Las Vegas makes people nervous around here.
Smart idea, ladies. Get your fingers on that pulse and feed it some salt (laughing over Sarah Frances' questions about what you served).
Damn I am so jealous! I have been involved in a street book club for two years and have never felt connected to these women--at least with books. So I continue to go and soemtimes host just for the wine- oh and the snacks.

I read a ton of YA, hang out with my "readers" a lot (my oldest is that age) so...yeah.

Neighbors... out here I only have two close neighbors. One house is a retired couple and we share horse woes, the other is a very stately eighty-something gentleman who raises angus cattle... and who's also seen me running up and down the highway in a silk pink slip trying to keep a young calf (not one of his) from becoming premature hamburger... yeah I've TRIED frightening my neighbors off, but so far, we're tight. :)
Hush Hush, haven't read it yet, it's on the list.
But I've got loads squee for Hunger Games and Catching Fire! On top of the squee, they're just well written, well paced, well everything, darn it!
Awesome. So was the teen book club just for teens or for anyone who likes reading teen lit? I LOVE my book club. We read everything from MG to classics, but mostly I love it because it means I get to have an evening with adults once a month!

How brilliant that you have a book club for teens! I would ponder such a thing...but I might die of humiliation of nobody showed up haha perhaps one day :)

A teen book club is a great idea! I have a cool book club assignment I'm doing with my students next quarter that's along those lines.
I just finished Hush, Hush last week and I started The Hunger Games last night. So far I'm loving it!

We have book clubs at the high school where I teach. The boys were the first to get a club, started and led by our principal, believe it or not. He calls it the He-man Book Club. Then the girls wanted one, too, of course - the She-Ra Book Club. Too cool! :-)

Haven't read Hush, Hush yet. I ve been waiting until qery time for my own fallen angel book. Not certain I want to read it until my own baby is out of my hands and can no longer be influenced one way of the other. But The Hunger Games? Awesome.
Fun idea! Closest thing to a YA book club I had was the city library youth newsletter I was on in high school. We sat around, acted ridiculous, and wrote book reviews and articles while eating cookies and drinking "lemon water," which I think was some kind of watered down lemonade (go figure).
Even that's not around anymore because it ran out of grant funding. Sad times.
Hunger Games is on my list! Can't wait to get to it, but I have a bunch of other books with earlier due dates!

Nothing new to add here, just wanna say that I also think this idea rocks. I love talking to the teens I know about what they are reading. They are so enthusiastic and thoughtful.
I firmly believe that deep inside everyone is sixteen.
That reminds me of "13 going on 30" when Jenna throws a sleepover. I doubt you guys danced around to Pat Bentar, though.

What a great way to build your own focus group. You can milk them for cool plot ideas and share the ones you pass on with me - brilliant!

Hush, Hush is on my list of books to read. I love the idea of hosting a teen book club. Maybe at a bookstore or library, to try and avoid the creepy factor. Of course, I would have to somehow figure out a way to find the time for it.
