Tell the Truth Tuesday: NaNo FAIL

I swear we started off strong. In fact, 9 days in we had over 20,000 words written! But...then we came to a screeching halt after deciding that our agent needed to take an early look. Having your agent hate an early look is slightly less devastating than having your agent hate an entire look. At least that's what we told ourselves when we hit send.

For the next week and a half we wallowed in a bad, bad way. Here's a preview:

Lisa: Can we e-mail Catherine, do you think?

Laura: I have the feeling that she's read it. I mean she has to have at least started it.

Lisa: We just really need to have a plan in place right now.

Laura: This is awful.

Lisa: I'm not sure I can do this anymore. I'm just not cut out for this.

Laura: I know...I feel the same way.

Rinse and Repeat.

Once more.

And then again.

Hello, drama queens. In our defense...okay, there's no defending that behavior. We've got a touch of the crazies. Anyway, 8 days later, we got the gold star agent seal of approval. Whoo hoo!

And then, of course, our page proofs for THE LIAR SOCIETY arrived. And then we shot some footage for the book trailer...and then...and then...and then...

What does all this add up to?

Oh, just a big, fat ol' NaNo FAIL.

But, here comes December. Craziest month of the year? Pshaw! Tons of presents left to buy? *shrug* Nothing's been wrapped? Whatever. We have a deadline. A crazy, ridiculous, divorce-inducing, child-services provoking deadline.

Buckle. Up.

Yikes! Sounds like December might be a teeny bit of a challenge! Make sure you take care of yourselves along the way - good luck!! :)

I have no idea what you were thinking NaNoing in the first place. Although I suppose you two are crazy anyway, so there is that.

Um...yeah. I got a big old F on my report card, too.

Here's to a productive December, right?

I really want to read The Liar Society so to heck with NaNo. Lol! Ah, if only we could freeze time.

Yay! You are so brave to send it to the agent so early. I bow to your awesomeness.

And don't worry that you failed at NaNo, you succeeded in life, and that's even better I think.

I'm so glad you got the seal of approval. There's nothing like that. And hey, if you need a reader, I'm you know, not that busy. Just sayin'.

MUCH better to have a green light than 50,000 words of nothing. AND you shot a book trailer. (when do we see it?)

Good luck, ladies! Don't skimp on the mulled wine, and everything else will fall into place. And if it doesn't, you won't notice.

I don't think having your agent like your stuff and doing page proofs should be linked to anything with the word "fail" in it, especially in ALL CAPS!

I NaNo failed this year too. Only my excuse isn't nearly as good as yours.

I failed at NaNo too. But in my defense, I sold a short story, and that totally derailed me for working on longer things like novels cuz when you sell one thing you all of a sudden decide you want to sell more MORE MOOAAARRR HAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHAAA and so you get all wrapped up in writing MOOOAAARRR and then whatever you were writing before tends to kind of y'know like fall by the wayside and such. Yes.

I'm giving myself a bye year for NaNo, is all I'm sayin'.

Bring on the craziness of December. It's the most magical craziest time of year.

Oh gosh, I was cringing for you! I thought bad news was at the end but no! That is amazingly awesome, ego boosting news! Congratulations on your green light and the pages and the December crazies! All good stuff.

Well... at least it won't be a boring month. Right? Uh, yeah, I know that was totally encouraging and made you think "Yes, she's so right! This is awesome not to be bored!" You're welcome.

Also, good luck. :)

I don't believe in NaNo, much like the Tooth Fairy. I want to ENJOY writing, not feel like my grandmother just found out I was a big slut with the guilt over my shoulders.

All that matters is the gold star agent seal of approval. :) Good luck!

November and December are somehow always crazy, crazy months. Good luck! And hey, at least you have a legit excuse for your NanoFAIL because I don't. :P

Best thing out of that 'fail' is that your agent liked what you started. I'm sending you a virtual high five, girls.

Unknown said...

I'm not sure you should ever put the words "Fail" and "Agent seal of approval" in the same post. :)

And woohoo on the proofs!

Shannon O'Donnell said...

Ha ha ha. You go, girls! I'm locked and loaded and ready to roll. :-)

My goggles are on and I'm strapped in. Hit it!

I am seriously freaking that it's December already.

Jill Kemerer said...

How cool that your agent loved your new pages! And 20K is huge! Enjoy December!

Ah well, I'd say this is a win, for sure. You can now dive into the rest of the WIP feeling confident and good about it. Something to celebrate, for sure. NaNo Schmamo. What would you get anyway? A certificate? Woo-hoo!

And you can totally deal with deadlines. Uh, hello. You're awesome? Yeah, you'll be fine. Tell the fams to suck it up and eat some Ramen noodles already. Stick an IOU under the tree, and you're golden. Deadline, here comes LiLa.

P.S. I'll totally break you out of the loony bin. I've got your back.

Yay for agent gold stars! I'm not even the least bit surprised at all. Everything you guys write deserves a gold star. #noarguing

Unknown said...

Wow, um... you guys rock just for attempting NaNo with all that going on!

The agent nod is icing on the cake!

Can't wait to read as your journey continues!

Sherrie Petersen said...

Ha! Well, I've never "won" NaNo, but I DO have almost 20K written on a novel that I'm in LOVE with so I feel like a winner :)

And getting the gold star from your agent is way better than a little badge saying you wrote 50K of crap, right?!

Dara said...

Um, you did A LOT better than me. I wrote about 10K. The first 4K were on my first project; then I decided I should work on finishing my other novel instead and got about 6K in that. Yeah, total NaNo Fail here...I'm also guessing the all-day "morning" sickness had something to do with lack of desire, but that's still a lame excuse in my book :P

Made it to day 8 with about 20, 000. Then stopped. Restarted in the last week. Ended up writing 13, 800 to win. I know the last 1,000 is crap. :D At least.

Don't call this a comeback

So it’s been a minute. Or 10. Or truthfully more like 2,102,400. At least we think that’s how many minutes there are in 3 years, but let...
