When the Slutty New Idea is EXACTLY What You Needed

Publishing isn't easy.

There are doubts. There are bad reviews. There are trends that no matter how you try to shoehorn 'em, your books will NEVER fit into.

Honestly, there's very little you can control in this business aside from your writing.

And what happens when that isn't working either? When you start the same book three different times and still can't get it right? When you're avoiding writing because the plot makes your head hurt? When you're losing faith in yourself as a writer?

And then along comes that slutty new idea.

You've been warned about this idea. This idea is distracting you from the book you're supposed to be finishing. Writers are NEVER supposed to succumb to the slutty new idea.

But we did.

And THANK GOD, HALLELUJAH, and PRAISE THE IDEA WHORE because this idea? This crazy, random book that probably isn't even close to marketable, IS FUN.

Yeah, that's right. We're writing again and laughing again and cranking out words and characters and one liners like nobody's business. This doesn't feel like work.  And that was kind of the whole point way back when we first started this whole gig. We started writing because we thought it would be fun.

So we've decided to ditch the pressure and forget about trends and marketability. We write for us and we write for fun.

Slutty new ideas FTW!

I just refer to them as SNI's as in Shiny New Ideas. And sometimes I do give in to them. Probably why I have like 5 or more books that I'm working on right now. And in March I'm going to start a new book and it's very different from anything I've written before. I can't wait to start!

Awesome that the idea has you both writing again and enjoying it.

You people have dirty minds. You're right though: dirty is fun!

Laughing in my coffee cup. Whatever gets you writing again is a Good Idea. So if Slutty=Good, more power to you!

Sometimes those are the best ideas! Go for it! Having fun is the most important part. I think. :)

Slutty ideas are my only ideas!

I like to keep it fun and interesting. When I find that the story I desperately want to work on isn't talking I leave it for a slutty idea. I stick that MS in the corner and make it think about what it's done to me... they always come around :)

That sounds awesome! The best writing comes, for me, when I'm not worried about what might sell and just write what I love. (Which could be why I haven't sold, but hey, at least I'm having fun.)

Yes! That is what writing is all about. Glad to hear you guys got your groove goin!

That's awesome! I'm curious, how do you manage to each write one book, while keeping the story in the same voice, etc.

FTW!!!! A Slutty new idea has completely taken over my drive to finish my latest WIP and I'm going nuts trying to keep the two of them separated.

But, when the slut is fun, why give it up.

Way to go, girls!!!! Enjoy!

I'm all over my SNI. I've been trying so hard on revisions, but they are stale. So SNI came in and hello. WEll, two SNI, but who's counting. Good luck!

Glad you're having fun. :)

I know what you mean.

The other day, it just felt as if the gears froze on my beast of an epic. So I gave into temptation and started on another idea.

Not only did I get a good foundation down, it gave me the energy I needed to get back to the first story.

YAY! for SNIs! Seriously. Sometimes you just have to write the thing that is the most ridiculous thing you've ever written. Because it's FUN. And then sometimes it turns into something real. But sometimes you just keep it in a little apartment on the other side of town to go visit when your WIP is being particularly atrocious.

(I can't believe I just made that analogy. The LiLa has a bad influence on me.)

If writing is tough all the time, who would want to keep writing??? Got to have some fun!!!

Yay yay yay for slutty new ideas! You gotta have fun writing - it's so easy to get down on yourself and stressed out by the industry. Bring on the par-tay!

I love it. Currently working on a litle ho of an idea myself.

Judging by the comments your sluttiness is catching which means you are...slutagious.

I love it when I get a chance to use one my new words.lol

This is so true! Although I've never heard it referred to as the slutty new idea... just a shiny one. Your ideas must be much more interesting than mine. Or at least a lot more, um, risque? ;)

Nicole Zoltack said...

Oh I am so in love with shiny new ideas! After I finish my current story, I'm going to have to look through all of my ideas to pick the next one to write. That's gonna be rough, picking which one since I have way too many ideas. lol I'll probably end up writing a brand new story idea, knowing me.

New x-rated post title option (also known as, what emily's dirty mind first saw):

When Being Slutty is EXACTLY What You Needed.

I was all "Amen." And then you were all, "No, we're talking about books." And I was like, "D'oh."

So glad you got your juices flowing with a wild and crazy new idea. Why not? Live! Write! Create!

Oh yeah. I needed this post. I used to write a little bit each day in my pet project. You know the one. The one where you know you'll never show it to anyone, but it's just for you. For FUN.

I need to get back to that novel.

Jessi said...

Yay! I needed this too! Been trying to decide what to get started on next--reliable, comfortable idea that's been around a while or the SNI that's slinky and intriguing and sure to get me into trouble. But fun, which is most definitely the point!

Funny post, but important point. Love of what you're writing is so important!
