Don't Quit Your Day Job

Lots of exciting things going on over here in LiLa Land. Changes are afoot my friends! One of the biggest changes is that my fabulous former employer is in desperate need of a proposal writer so I'm going to have a day job again. Honestly, I was a little nervous about the decision until I had this conversation with Laura:

Lisa: So, are you sure you're ok with me going back to work? I mean I think we wrote more back when I actually had a job, so productivity shouldn't be an issue.
Laura: Well...don't take this the wrong way.
Lisa: Um....that almost always means I'm going to take whatever it is you say, the wrong way.
Laura: It's just that, I remember you saying that you never really thought you were cut out to be a stay-at-home mom.
Lisa: I never said that! sdkgjiejgijvsmskdfcksookfskmdkmcfo
Laura: Huh?
Lisa: Oh, sorry. Jack just body slammed Mia and I accidentally stepped on my computer in my rush to pry their small bodies off each other. Yowsers, I need a drink and a manny. In that order.
Laura: *expectant sigh*
Lisa: Crap. You're totally right.
Laura: I always am.

To be completely honest, I'm REALLY excited to head back to work. I've had the opportunity to talk to a few of the people on my new team and they seem pretty amazing. It was essential for me to find a job where I'd still be able to write, continue to be a hands on mom and make a steady income. I've enjoyed the past couple of years at home with the kids, but this just feels like the perfect opportunity to bring a little more balance into my life.

Lucky for all of you, the new job means new opportunities for me to humiliate myself. Stay tuned for tomorrow's installment tentatively titled: Lisa and the Terrible Horrible, No Good, Very Bad DRUG TEST.

Congrats on the job and good luck on that drug test!

The best thing about working full time while being an author is how many times you get to hear people say: "Wow! I can't believe you work full time and still write books!"

The next best thing is the paycheck ...

Sounds like a great opportunity and a great decision for you. Sometimes stretching your creativity in another direction frees up time and creativity in fiction -- plus energizes you for the Mom work. So happy for you!

Best of luck, my friend.

(And don't pee on yourself, or eat a poppy seed bagel before testing.)

I really believe that some aren't as happy at home with their kids. They need to work and have purpose outside of being a mom. Congrats on the job! Can't wait for the stories. :)

Truth: If I didn't work, I wouldn't write as much.

But the balance thing is very tricky...

Welcome back to the craziness!

I totally feel you on this. One, it's nice to have a paycheck every week. Two, it's nice to get out of the house for something other than shopping and running errands (not sure if that's the case with your job, but it is with mine). And three, it's another place where you can talk about your fiction. I've found that most people I work with think it's beyond cool that they know "a real writer, in the flesh." :D

I was in Boston all weekend for my sister's 30th birthday. Which was awesome. But I have a funny manny peddy story.

All the ladies decided they wanted a manny peddy, on Saturday, at the last minute. So we drove all over Somerville and Arlington, looking for a shop that had appointments (obviously forgetting about Mother's Day).

I was the one jumping out of the car at each stop, and the last one we checked was really weird. It was like this little closet, with 8 ladies standing around drinking wine, and only one lady getting her toes done in the one and only chair.

I wonder what they were thinking when they saw this huge, balding fat guy coming to the door.

Congrats on the day job.

As a working-writing-mom, I'm behind you. It's insane but it's who I am. I think being yourself and living the life you want to live is the best example you can set for your kids. Also, if they're anything like mine, they'll learn to sort laundry at a young age :)

Congrats on the new job! I'd sort of like one, but that would require brushing my hair on a regular basis...

Your new job makes you test drugs? Is it a pharmaceutical company. ooh. Could be a concept for a new book...

So excited for the drug test post!!! (I have a great drug test story of my own)
Also, staying at home works for some moms and for others, it doesn't. Good luck with your new endeavor! And I am glad you will keep writing.

Don't call this a comeback

So it’s been a minute. Or 10. Or truthfully more like 2,102,400. At least we think that’s how many minutes there are in 3 years, but let...
