Tell the Truth Tuesday School Visit Style

How many times did my eyes well up with tears during our first official school visit to Glen Crest Middle School? Let's break it down...

1. Upon driving up and seeing this sign.

2. After walking into the building and being reminded of my teaching days. Lisa said it smelled like hormones, but to me it smelled like growing up. And a gym, but mainly growing up.

3. When we finally got to give publicist extraordinaire Kay a hug and saw that she had sprayed her hair pink for us.

4. After the nicest librarians in the world revealed that they had purchased multiple pounds of Twizzlers and 12 packs of Diet Coke just for us. In addition to their thoughtfulness, I may have been misty-eyed because I knew that those Twizzlers would at some point end up in my belly and around my thighs.

5. Over lunch when Lisa and I looked at each other and began discussing the fact that we're living our dream. The jury's still out on whether or not it was the delicious Jimmy John's sub that did it or the talk about how much fun it is to write together, but it was a total single tear moment. I was sure to look away before Lisa could make fun of me.

I'm an emotional headcase who has been known to cry during the opening scene of The Lion King. What can I say, all those animals coming together to celebrate the birth of a lion cub gets me all verklempt.

Are your truths today as pathetic as mine?

PS: Bonus tear-jerking truth. This made us want to cut someone.

PPS: We're doing one last #askiclue Twitter chat tonight at 8 PM EST. Don't miss it--you can ask us ANYTHING!

Pathetic truth: After a night of no sleep, I'm not going to put a single dab of makeup on for the day.

Patheticer truth: Awww, who am I kidding? I never put on a dab of makeup. I did take a shower, though! Win!!!!!

I think these truths are awesome.

Truth: When I need to cry I'll stick in a movie to make it happen. Nothing like a tear-jerker to get you going.

Truth: My new MC loves Ben & Jerry's Phish Food Ice Cream WITH Goldfish crackers - I'm going to try it since I invented the combo. Hope it doesn't suck.

Jen, that combo sounds epic!

Truth: Day 2 of daughter puking on me is wearing me down, and I'm up checking in with Dr. Google.

Truth: My agent's editorial notes were 4 pages long and made my head spin.

Sounds like an awesome experience. Librarians are the coolest!

Awesome. I would've been emotional too. What a warm welcome they gave you - and with twizzlers too!

My truths:

1) I want an agent. Now. So I can wait another few years, possibly write a few more books, and then maybe, just maybe, actually get commercially published...

2) I submitted to an online magazine, and got an email back that said 'Here are the editor's notes' and there was red ink throughout the story, and I CRIED because it was so awesome to see red marks where an EDITOR had given me feedback... like I was a REAL writer...

3) I've opened the editor's email like ten times, even after I'd revised the story and sent it back, just because looking at the red marks makes me feel like I accomplished something amazing.

4) I'm about this close || to querying my ms before I should... this close ||.... but I swear I won't...

5) There are about a hundred books *ahem, POSSESSION* that are getting ready to come out, and I want them NOW, because, hey, Elana is my hero and I want to worship her reader-fan style by buying her book... :)

There nothing wrong with tears of joy over the beautiful parts of life. They mean you're alive.

Pathetic? Are you kidding? If my book ever gets published I'm pretty sure I'll be crying every day. Like, There it is in my bookshelf. MY book! *starts bawling*

Truth: I'm totally lost as to how to proceed with the new ending of Evangeline.

Truth2: I'm starting to understand and/or enjoy Twitter. Thanks, Tweetdeck!

Hey, your truths seem pretty single-tear-worthy. The whole school visit sounds awesome!

Pathetic truth: I went to sleep earlier last night, so I could get more sleep. I woke up 6 hours later, 1.5 hours before I had to wake up. FAIL.

Love your truths...and seriously, mine are too pathetic to share! But I loved yours. Loads!

You are not pathetic. You're living the dream! I can't wait to go back to school as the author, especially my own elementary and middle schools. And the places I've taught, and... xoxo

You mean there are people who DON'T cry at the opening of Lion King??? How is that possible? :)

I cry when Mufasa dies, and when he comes back in the cloud... Yeah, it doesn't take much for me to get emotional. And a day like you described? Wow, I'd totally be crying tears of joy, too. I'm so happy for you both!! Living the dream!

Don't call this a comeback

So it’s been a minute. Or 10. Or truthfully more like 2,102,400. At least we think that’s how many minutes there are in 3 years, but let...
