Three Random thoughts on all things gay

1. I'm on the look out for a gay best friend. I mean, Kathy Griffin's got an army of gays who worship her and Rachel Zoe has her beloved Brad. I want a gay boyfriend to take me shopping and tell me how fabulous I am. Is that so wrong?

At first I was a little freaked out by the dad at preschool drop off who was scoping me out. I may be old, and I may be a mom, but I know when someone is eying me. And this guy was totally checking me out. Yesterday afternoon he finally struck up a conversation and to my surprise I felt the teeniest, tiniest flicker of gaydar.

I took a closer look at his horn rimmed Prada glasses and perfectly tailored suit and suddenly realized that I'm way too lame to have a gay boyfriend. Let's face it, I do 99% of my shopping at Target and plan my hair appointments around weddings and major events. I'm so unfabulous it's not even funny.

But this was a possibility I'd never considered. A gay dad.

A gay dad to have playdates with. A gay dad to drink wine with as we critique other children's ensembles at the playground. A gay dad to whisper catty commentary to at tiresome preschool events. A gay dad to expose my kids to an alternative family at a young age so they realize that families come in all shapes and sizes.

Heaven.

I realize that the gay boyfriend of my girlish fantasies is based soley on stereotypes and WAY too much Bravo TV, but a girl can dream, right? Now, I have no idea how I'll figure out if my new friend is actually gay, and man it sure could get awkward if he thinks I'm flirting with him, but you know what? That's a chance I'm willing to take.

2. Huge round of applause for Glee's portrayal of a conflicted gay teen last night. It was just so well done. Gossip Girl attempted it with their outing of Eric last year, but that felt so melodramatic and fake. Glee managed to make the moment ring true amidst the musical stylings of the Accafellas and a totally random (and awesome) appearance by Josh Groban. Bravo!

3. We need to remember to choose our words with care, as Kiersten reminds us in this thought provoking post. Whether you're an aspiring author, a mother or just a human being please read this and remember to think before you speak.

Speaking as someone whose gay to straight friend ratio for years was 3:1, go for the gay friend -- those include the gay parent. There are a lot of fab gays in the world, and you can never have too many friends, gay or not.

I had a gay best friend. Now he lives in Tennessee and produces shows for HGTV. I miss having him close by, but I'm glad he's still part of my life.

My mom has been known to say (wistfully) "I would love to be married to a gay man" . . . now, I wouldn't take it quite that far, but a gay best friend. . . .

(spoken like Meg Ryan in the diner)
YES! YES! YES!

p.s. I'm totally going over to K's house with some scissors to get a lock of hair. Want me to get some for you? We could google some kind of awesome voodoo charm.

I LOVED that part of Glee last night. The conflict between Kurt and his (unseen) father is wonderful. Can't wait til he plays football - he'll be a star, I'm sure.

I had a gay best friend in college but he was so unfabulous! All he knew was how to put together perfectly preppy outfits from JCrew! Loved him anyway:)

Costco is even better than Target because there are no dressing rooms....you just hold it up and put it in the cart.

I have a gay dad-type friend. I am certain I disappoint him in the ensemble area all the time.

GLEE was awesome. I teared up at the moment of honesty. And totally loved the rock through the car dance number....high school musical gone surreal.

I feel so out of the loop. Bravo? Glee? Haven't set my eyes on either. I'm such a failure.
And I've always wanted to steal George (Rupert Everett) from My Best Friend's Wedding.

Um, gay best friends are not a figment of TV. In fact, I had many of them in high school, and they are just as awesome as they are in fiction land. Except funnier, bitchier, and better in general. They are just more fun to be around.

You better get on that gay friend situation.

You are just too funny! I have one who is SO awesome ... he can hang out with my hubby, he's like an uncle to my kiddos, and we have the most fun conversations! And, LOVED Glee last night!

I am SO unfabulous! No gay man worth his salt would even have me. This conversation reminds me that I should probably do something about my hair/nails/wardrobe. Plus, one of the Tenners just told me I should start exercising to build a stronger core.

I might as well get me some mom-jeans and an applique sweatshirt with an adorable kitten traced in puffy paint. Maybe I can pick some up at The Walmart.

Don't call this a comeback

So it’s been a minute. Or 10. Or truthfully more like 2,102,400. At least we think that’s how many minutes there are in 3 years, but let...
